When life gives you…..

Shane & I were talking last night, and realized that somehow the entire past 7 days are just gone. I have little recollection of the days, yet I also remember some of the moments all too well. Somehow in a week's span we managed to: Tuesday! Yay Baxter got his cast off!! It was so quick. 10mins with the doctor and then they hand him to me and basically say he's good to go. His leg smelled something awful and he wouldn't walk on it. I was confused and asked a bunch of questions, but the doctor said the tendon healed perfectly, and aside from the dermatitis from the bandages he could go for walks and basically get back to normal slowly. I was shocked. I picked him up into the truck and headed home. And this is where things went BAD. For the entire 20 minute ride home he was going after the foot. I was reaching back trying to grab him, screaming at him. I didn't know what else to do, Even if I pulled over I knew he would only stop for as long as I could hol...

Ragnar Relay, circa 2007

Since I haven't had the energy to blog about the Baxter chronicles or my training the past couple weeks, I got inspired to re-post this post from 2007. This weekend is the Ragnar Relay Del sol so I wanted to share the story from 2007…. That race and experience is something I'll never forget! (P.S. Tonsa is amazing healthy today!) Runnin' Ragged "For T___ Yesterday was a very sad day. It started out great. I met my friends Natalie & Mike for my 50min tempo run. Somehow we miscalculated & ended up going 65mins, but I lowered my HR for the extra, so hopefully it's ok! I'm usually VERY good about sticking to my schedule. That's what it's for right? Anyway, on this run we were talking about the upcoming Relay we are doing in a few weeks. My friend "T" emailed me several months ago & asked if I would like to be part of this 12 person relay, that goes across about 180miles in 24hours. Of course I was like "sure let me see who else I...

swim fishy fishy

Week 1 swim week CHECK. Unfortunately (or not), I missed the first day which was a 3k, but no fear - coach has added another swim packed week starting TODAY. I'm very happy with how my body responded to the increase in swim volume and intensity. I'm a good swimmer, and while I do love to swim for some reason I do have a hard time getting my butt to the pool for all 3 days per week on my schedule. Not always, but sometimes. Swims are ~ an hour long, but 20mins to the gym, 20 mins home. 10mins to stare at the pool and get in when I'm cold (seems to be a lot lately), then 20mins to shower and put on 10layers of lotion to offset the chlorine damage. Yup, it's a good 2+hour workout, smack in the middle of the day. I'm lucky to have a work from home job, and typically have a nice break in the middle of the day so it does work out, but sometimes while I'm busy going back and forth across the pool, I do miss out on some one off work that needs to be done = I mak...

being sick

Seems like everyone and their mom, dog, child, brother has been sick in the past month. Nasty colds, bronchitis, aches, fever chills. I figured it was just a matter of time being before it got me, especially with a crazy past 8 weeks. 3 half marathons, a dog in surgery with weekly sedation and cast changes. An emergency trip to the dog hospital when his cast slipped. Husband traveling a lot = single doggy nurse (it really IS a lot of work) and topping it all off with my third and final half marathon when I was less than recovered from the second one out on a dirty, dusty farm on an exceptionally windy day. Yup, I was doomed. I'm sure I could have prevented some of it. Upped my greens and fruits and veggies, but when I'm tired and busy and single with the hubby out of town, I'd be lying if I said I didn't cheat on a good diet. Not that I'm out eating burgers and fries and such, but I'm lazy and don't cook my normal meals of everything in the fridge sal...

London's run

Image
I did it. I went for it, I gave it my all….but in the end, I just didn't have anything left in the tank or my legs to keep the fast pace past mile 9. My garmin splits CLEARLY show where the wheels fell off. I just couldn't seem to get them back ;). I guess 3 half marathons in less than 2 months will do that to ya! The morning was beautiful, a bit breezy (but thankfully not nearly as windy as it was at my house when we left for the race!). The course was about an hour drive away on dirt farm roads. In hindsight, I probably should have done the other course I was debating over, on the roads. The dusty, uneven roads were really hard for me and I ended up carrying and using my inhaler 3 times during the race because of the air quality. My allergies are still a mess 2 days later. I ran hard from the get go, but never digging too deep. I was very very happy realizing that not one person passed me from the start and I was running as the 4th female until mile 10 when a girl ...

Going for it

I'm not sure I'm recovered, I'm not sure I'm totally healthy (feeling a little off this week), but I've decided why not? Just go for it. After a complete over-analyzing internal debate on which race I should do this weekend, I've chosen to do London's run . The course is more flat than the ARR Desert Classic I was thinking about doing and it's for a great cause. It is however, on all dirt, which most people like but I'm not a big fan of so I'm definitely going to have to focus. My goal is 1:36:59 and a guaranteed entry (well after $255 entry fee - wtf?) into the New York marathon. The funny thing is, I'm not even sure I want to run another marathon, let alone train for one. I've never gone after anything that "qualifies" me for an event so to me this is just a nice little challenge. I wish I had more recovery time after PF Changs, but the qual times are changing after Jan 31 so this is my shot! I'd say I've got a 5...

Rock and Roll 1/2 marathon

Image
The Rock and Roll events are like Disneyland for runners. Great first time events, but IMHO, way way way too much fluff. Too much money, too many people. Funny how I don't seem to say the same about Ironman, huh? Potat-O, PotAHto. I did my first RnR even in 02 in San Diego. It's the race that ruined me for years. I gave in and did one more, the Phoenix RnR in like 03 or 04 maybe…. had my worst half time to date (2:14 or something) and swore I'd never do another one. I think I'm finally learning not to use that word never… Shane jumped on the bandwagon after Tucson to help pace our friend to a NY Marathon Qual time of <1:37. I didn't have it in my head that I could possibly EVER go any faster than I did in Tucson, but since we were in Mexico for 10 days and I needed some outlet to work off all the calories, I did all the training with him. The paces were hard, but I did them, even sometimes with a hangover. I finally registered for the obnoxiously overpric...
